Afghanistan blast kills Stryker GI

A Joint Base Lewis-McChord 4th Stryker Brigade soldier died Wednesday when he encountered an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol in Afghanistan, the Army said Thursday.

Sgt. David J. Chambers, 25, of Hampton, Va., died in the Panjwai district of Kandahar province.

He joined the Army in May 2009 and deployed to Afghanistan from June 2010 to May 2011, and again in November 2012.

Chambers was assigned to the 38th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, and arrived at Lewis-McChord in October 2011.

He received the Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal with third oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one campaign star and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, among other honors.
