Man who claimed he was armed robs shoe store

A man robbed a Payless ShoeSource in Hazel Dell on Monday about 6:30 p.m.

He came into the store at 8901 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave. wearing a green hooded coat drenched from the rain and said he had a gun, but none was seen by the employees. The man was described as slender, white and 40 to 50 years old with facial hair.

After he demanded money from the till and the cashier handed it over, he fled the store, said Sgt. Chad Rothenberger with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Police searched the area but were unable to find the man.

Rothenberger said the sheriff’s office is seeing an usual amount of strong-armed robberies lately.

A week ago, Revive Espresso and Tea, part of a Chevron car wash/convenience store complex at 610 N.E. 99th St., was also robbed by a man who implied he had a gun.

“It’s kind of befuddling,” Rothenberger said.
