Olympia council votes to restrict transients

The Olympia City Council voted Tuesday night to ban camping on public property and to place new restrictions on sitting and lying on downtown sidewalks.

The camping ban needs another vote before taking effect Feb. 8. The sidewalk restrictions take effect Jan. 18.

The Olympian report advocates for the homeless asked for more time to work on the problems. But City Manager Steve Hall said the city has made many efforts to address homelessness over the years and a little more time will not solve them.

Hall asked for the changes because of health and safety concerns about people camping outside City Hall.
