Barbara Ilene Strote, 81, left this earth to meet her Lord on February 6, 2013. Barbara was born on July 1, 1931, to Manley Porter and Lillian (Ericson) Porter in Port Townsend, Washington. Barbara was the oldest of ten brothers and sisters.
She met Roland F. Strote at the USO in Port Townsend and they married July 1, 1951. They had eight children. They lived for a short time in Rockford, Illinois, before moving to Washington, living in Tacoma, Port Orchard, and in 1966 moved to Hoquiam where they resided for ten years. Barbara and Roland were members of the Hoquiam UMC . She was an active member of the choir. In 1976 they moved to Pahrump, Nev., and Barbara finally felt at home in the desert. While in Pahrump, Barbara and Roland were instrumental in establishing and building the Pahrump Valley UMC where Barbara was also an active member of the choir. In 2010, they moved back to the Hoquiam area to be closer to their children.
Barbara was a mother to many having helped raise her siblings, her own children, operating daycares in her homes both in Washington and Nevada, and having an open door to everyone’s friends. She had a love for reading and books, which she instilled in her children. She sang whenever an opportunity arose, and had an overdeveloped sense of curiosity. She loved being outdoors just enjoying God’s creation.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Roland; son, Rob; son, David (Barb); son, Tim (Joyce); daughter, Debbie Cummings (Ken); son, Jeff; son, Randy (Barb); son, Marty; and daughter, Dorsie Bradford (Eric); eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and many friends and extended family. A special thank you to the staff of Hindbaugh AFH in Montesano for the excellent care provided to Barbara for the past three years.
A memorial service will be held at the Hoquiam United Methodist Church, 520 W. 5th Street, Hoquiam, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2013. Memorials may be made to Pahrump Valley UMC, 1300 Nevada 372, Pahrump, NV 89048.
