Bertha K. Kangas, 91, longtime Grayland resident and former Quality Control Technician at Ocean Spray in Markham, died Thursday morning, April 25, 2013, at Willapa Harbor Care Center in Raymond, Washington.
Bertha was born on July 3, 1921, in Raymond to Matt and Weino (Puumala) Perttula. She grew up in Aberdeen and Grayland. She graduated from Ocosta High School. She then graduated from Grays Harbor Business College.
She married Sgt. Oiva Kangas from the U.S. Army and they moved to El Paso, Texas during World War II for a year before returning to Grayland.
Bertha worked in the office at ITT Rayonier and then for Nelson Crab & Oyster in Tokeland as a secretary. She later worked for Ocean Spray as a Quality Control Technician.
Bertha was a member of the United Finnish Kaleva Brothers and Sisters #9, Grays Harbor Art League, was a 50-year member of Eastern Star and a charter member of the Grayland Children’s Orthopedic League. She also liked to cook and oil paint.
Bertha is survived by her son, Paul Kangas of Seattle; brother, Arnold and his wife, Mary Perttula of Grayland and their son, Mark Perttula of Sioux Falls, Iowa.
There will be a time of visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m., in Fern Hill Funeral Home’s Chapel, followed by burial at Fern Hill Cemetery in the Finnish Section.
