Bill Ray West

Bill Ray West, 86, a resident of Aberdeen, died on Friday, July 27, 2012, at Montesano Health and Rehab.

Bill was born on October 2, 1926, in Three Sands, Oklahoma, to Herschal J. and Clara L. (Gleason) West.

Bill enlisted in the Navy in 1944. He was commissioned on tne U.S. Garrard. When the ship was on 24-hour leave he met Phyllis Schnackenberg. They fell in love and married on May 15, 1946, in Cyrill, Okla. Bill remained on the U.S. Garrard until it was decomissioned in 1946. During that time the ship brought home American POW’s from Japan.

Bill and Phyllis returned to Vanport, Ore. where they lived unti the flood of 1948 which devastated government housing at the Kaiser Yards, now Jantzen Beach, Ore. They relocated to Portland, Ore. then Milwaukee, Ore. and Gladstone, Ore. where they lived until 1969 before moving to Rainier, Ore. and finally Aberdeen in 1987.

Bill worked for a Ford dealership, working his way up to General Manager and Vice President. His last employment was Aberdeen Ford, Lincoln Mercury.

Bill was an avid remote control airplane model builder and flier. He loved his family and church family at Central Park Baptist Church where he was their sign man.

Bill is survived by his son, Bruce West of Okla.; two grandchildren, Michael (Trish) West and Mandi West of Longview; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Mac, Kyah and Khloe; and a very special friend, Nancy Perez of Hoquiam.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; and brother, Gary.

There will be a funeral service for Bill at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2012, at Central Park Baptist Church in Aberdeen. Burial will take place at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. A card of condolence can be sent to Central Park Baptist Church.
