Clifford E. “Kip” Smith, 97, a longtime South Bend resident died on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at the Willapa Harbor Hospital in South Bend. He was born on February 27, 1916, in South Bend to Myron and Maggie (Cross) Smith.
Kip graduated from South Bend High School, Class of 1935. He went off to serve in the Army during World War II from 1942-1945. Upon his return he married his loving wife of 70 years Dorothy Evans on April 24, 1943, in Novato, California; she survives him at the family home in South Bend. He worked for various local lumber mills and was at times self employed.
Kip enjoyed fishing and being in the woods, peeling bark and picking ferns. He faithfully watched the Mariners and the Seahawks and loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Leonard (Nancy) Smith of South Bend and Larry (Michelle) Smith of Aberdeen; two daughters, Doris (Robert) Byrd of South Bend and Norma Gray also of South Bend; 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by brothers, Warren, Rollo, Grayden, Harold and Forrest and sisters, Velma and Migon.
A gathering will be held for family and friends 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the residence of Doris and Robert Byrd in South Bend. Memorial donations may be made to the Raymond Ambulance Fund or the South Bend High School Scholarships. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.
