Della Louise (Hammar) Smith


Della Louise (Hammar) Smith, 95 of Bothell, Washington, passed peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2013, at Evergreen Hospital, surrounded by her family. The daughter of Oliver Grant and Susanna (Zimmerman) Yocum; Della was born on November 1, 1917, in Mitchell County, Kansas. She was known as Louise by her friends and family.

On June 20, 1948, Louise was united in marriage to Claude Eugene Smith in Beloit, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 26, 1984. On June 17, 1997, Louise was united in marriage to Russell Woodrow Hammar in Bothell, Washington, who preceded her in death on December 19, 2004.

Louise is survived by her two sons and spouses, Marvin and JoAnna Smith of Bothell, Wash. and Michael and LeAnn Smith of Snohomish, Wash.; five granddaughters, Stefany Peterson (spouse Michael Peterson) of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., Michel Williams (spouse Justin Williams) of Nooksack, Wash., Josalyn Schuster of Ballard, Wash., Dara Smith of Snohomish, Wash., and Megan Smith of Snohomish, Wash.; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Nicholas, Mia and Aidan. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and two brothers.

Louise was a graduate from Beloit High School in Beloit, Kan with the Class of 1935 and a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, Wash. with the Class of 1969. Louise taught kindergarten and music in McCleary, Wash. from 1963 until 1982.

Louise will be remembered for being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and a dedicated educator. Louise was a faithful follower of Jesus, baptized into Christ in her early teens, devoted member of the Church of Christ, and attended Christ’s Heritage Church in Lynwood, Wash. Louise will be remembered for her service, hospitality and amazing cooking ability.

A graveside service for family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the McCleary Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at a time to be determined in May 2013 at Christ’s Heritage Church in Lynnwood, Wash. Donations/remembrances in honor of Della Louise (Hammar) Smith may be made to Christ’s Heritage Church for a Community Meal to feed homeless individuals in Lynnwood, Wash.
