Don joined the Navy on July 25, 1941, after his junior year then earned his GED. He proudly served on the heavy cruiser, U.S.S. Louisville, for 6 years during World War II in the Pacific. In 1947, he was honorably discharged from the Navy and moved to Missoula, Montana, working in the local lumber mills.

Here he met Rosella (Sally) Beyl and they were married in 1955. They had 4 boys and 1 girl from 1956 to 1964. In 1976, Donald moved back to the Pacific Northwest where he resided until the time of his death.

Donald spent time working at the Aberdeen and Hoquiam Senior Centers. He also enjoyed playing pool, riding his bicycle and going for walks. Most of all, he loved spending time with Ruth Johnson, whom he loved very much. They spent all of their time together and enjoyed watching Christian TV and attending church at the United Christian Church.
