Donald Raymond Strawn, age 88, died peacefully, at his home in Montesano, on January 15, 2013. Don was born on November 9, 1924, in Newport, Oregon to Raymond A. and Ruth M. (Lusby) Strawn.
After graduating from high school, Don joined the Navy where he served as a Communication Technician in World War II aboard the U.S.S. Independence.
Once he was out of the service he joined the U.S. Forest Service in Twisp, where he raised his family. In 1968, Don moved with his family to Anacortes, working at NAS Whidbey in the Civil Service. While in Anacortes he owned and operated Skyline Marina and had a fishing charter business. His love for fishing and hunting was shared with others through his sporting goods store, D&D Sporting Goods. In 1979, he started a new career with Weyerhaeuser mills, retiring in Aberdeen.
He enjoyed his retirement by traveling to Hawaii, spending time with family, and fishing on the river. One of his life’s highlights was going to northern Alberta, farming and moose hunting with his friend, Tony.
Survived by his loving wife, Dolores “Dode” Strawn; his children, Ronald, Gary (Sheila), Denise Hyatt, Mark (Pam), Cindy Graham, Kimberly (Brian) Kelly; a sister, Joanne Morrison; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a dear friend and neighbor, Kris Davidson. Don was preceded in death by his siblings, Clairene Hunter and Charles.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Harbors Home Health and Hospice; St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elma; or St. John’s Catholic Church in Montesano.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Hoquiam’s Sunset Memorial Park. A gathering will follow immediately to celebrate Don’s life at Saint John’s Catholic Church in Montesano.
Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.
