Longtime Hoquiam resident Esther Evelyn Winter passed away on February 25, 2013, in Olympia. She was 96. Esther was born on March 22, 1916, in Fullerton, Nebraska to Jesse and Mary Speicher. When she was six months old, she moved with her family to a farm in Wray, Colorado.
In 1935, she married Orval Winter and they moved to Washington State in 1937 settling in Montesano before moving to Hoquiam in 1938. She worked at the Economy Market and Lamb Grays Harbor during the war and then worked at the Grays Harbor Veneer plant for 25 years. She also worked part time at the state liquor store in Hoquiam for six years.
She was a long time member and past president of the ladies auxiliary of the Hoquiam Eagles. She loved being a grandmother and also enjoyed RV camping, fishing, bowling, golf and watching the Mariners, Sonics and Seahawks.
She is survived by her son, Doyle and his wife, Ann of Olympia; daughter, Marlene Pope of Corona del Mar, California; brother, Lloyd of North Platte, Nebraska; sister, Irma of Wray, Colorado; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orval in 2006; brothers, Harold, Gordon and Bernard; and son-in-law Jim Pope.
At her request, no memorial service will be held.
