Esther M. Chakones

January 13, 1918 - April 4, 2013

Esther Chakones, loving wife and mother, left this world peacefully on April 4, 2013. Esther was born January 13, 1918, in Astoria, Oregon. Her family relocated to Hoquiam in 1926. She met Peter, her husband of 68 years, when they both worked for Safeway. They were married in Hoquiam in November 1942.

In 1961, the happy couple moved to Olympia. Esther and Pete eventually owned and operated their own store, Pete’s Serve-U Grocery, for ten years on the east side. After selling the store, Esther and Pete went to work for the State of Washington until they both retired in 1984.

In retirement, Esther enjoyed cooking, reading, word searches, attending social clubs, collecting elephants and playing bingo. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family. For many years, she attended services and volunteered at the Littlerock Methodist Church. Camping and going on cruises were some of the things she and Pete loved to do together.

She will be greatly missed by her friends at Colonial Inn, where she has resided for the last seven years. She was a remarkable woman who brightened the lives of everyone she met.

Esther is survived by her daughter, Sue Dellsite (Ken); her son, Greg (Sandra); and her three grandchildren, Kenny Dellsite (Karen), Michelle Brown (Joe), and Brandon Chakones; as well as four great-grandchildren, Kenny, Kamron, Amber, and Andrew.

Services will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday April 28, 2013, at Scott Lake Community Center.

Arrangements are being handled by Mills and Mills in Tumwater.
