October 17, 1924 - April 21, 2012
Toni, 87, peacefully passed away at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, on Saturday, April 21, 2012. She was a long time Grays Harbor resident.
Etha “Toni” Stone was born on October 17, 1924, in Ellensburg, Washington, to parents Daisy Etha Kinney Stone and John Mason Stone.
Etha’s family later moved to Yakima where she graduated from Yakima High School in 1942. Etha gained the name Toni from her childhood friends who called her “Stoney” which eventually became “Toni”. Toni worked from her early teenage years at JC Penney in Yakima until after her high school graduation.
Toni went on to graduate from Peterson Business College in 1945 in Pasco, Wash. While living in Pasco, she and her friends rode Harley Davidson motorcycles because of the gas rationing due to the war. This is how she met and eventually married Hubert M. “Snuffy” Brumfield who was stationed at the Pasco Naval Air Base. When she graduated from Business College, she moved to Southern California and worked for a newspaper as a stenographer/bookkeeper.
When Hubert proposed, she moved back to Washington and they were married on May 8, 1948, in Yakima and honeymooned in Lake Tahoe/Reno. They enjoyed many years of repeated trips to this area, especially to the Reno Air Races. Toni and Snuffy were married 63 years at the time of Snuffy’s death in February of 2011.
Toni was a full time homemaker and took care of H.M. Brumfield Logging bookkeeping. Together with her husband, she hosted many years of clam digging sessions, hunting feasts, and fly-in gatherings which were enjoyed by many friends and family. Toni was an avid “second seat” flyer and navigator for Snuffy. She enjoyed many years of flying all over the country and Mexico. Toni and Snuffy exposed as many of their friends and family as possible to their love of flying, taking them to places they loved.
Toni was an amazing seamstress and loved knitting, crocheting and all kinds of craft work. Toni would work in crafting between being her children’s biggest fan at their events. She also canned most anything Snuffy brought home.
She is survived by sister, Bertha Treadwell of Bremerton, Wash.; brother, Ted (Jerry) Stone of Yakima, Wash.; and sister, Kathleen Kelly of Vancouver, Wash.
Toni is also survived by her daughter, Bobbi Marie of Marysville; son, Ben (Teresa) Brumfield of Ocean Shores; her grandchildren, BoDean Monroe (Lindsey) Bradstreet of Seattle, Emily Brumfield of Aberdeen, Rob Marin (Jenni) Bradstreet of Seattle, Evan Brumfield of Seattle; one great-granddaughter, Riley Jo Bradstreet of Seattle; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; father; mother; and brother, Gilbert.
Toni resided at Harbour Pointe Shores in Ocean Shores for the past year and half. Our family acknowledges with appreciation all of the support and wonderful care the staff and her friends extended to her while at HPS. We are grateful. We would also like to thank Dr. Theresa Stoken of SeaMar in Ocean Shores for her compassionate care of our mother.
A celebration of Toni’s life will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Waves Restaurant located in the Best Western Lighthouse Suites in Ocean Shores.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Hoquiam Senior Center, 703 Simpson Ave. Box A, Hoquiam, Wash. 98550.
Toni and Snuffy are together again and will be interred at the Mt. Tahoma Cemetery in Kent, Wash. with full military honors.
