Gaylin Dea Bernard, 61 years of age and a longtime Hoquiam area resident, passed away peacefully at her home on September 25, 2012, after a brief illness. Dea was born on August 7, 1951, in Vancouver, Washington, to Robert and Marsha (Shirey) Symank.
Dea attended schools in the Portland, Oregon area and following her high school graduation she joined the US Navy and was a Vietnam era veteran. While serving with the Navy she was a payroll accountant.
She attended Lane Community College, Portland State and Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen where in 1984, she graduated with degrees in accounting and business management. She operated Bernard Bookkeeping Service for over 15 years. Dea also worked as an office manager for the Shoalwater Bay Environmental Program at Tokeland, Washington before her illness forced an early retirement.
Dea was married to Freddy Bernard in 1979, and they were about to celebrate 35 years together, living in Hoquiam.
Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, decorating, exploring the great Northwest outdoors and traveling.
Dea is survived by her husband, Freddy Bernard of the family home in Hoquiam; her daughter, Margaret Weinkauf of Hawaii; two grandchildren, Nate and Brad; one great-grandchild; her parents, Robert and Marsha Symank; and her brother and his wife, Randy and Carol Symank of the Crooked River Ranch area in Central Oregon. Her extended family includes her nieces and nephews, Tyr, Jessica, Connor and Sophie Symank of Seattle and Autumn Symank of Spokane; and other relatives.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 5th Street in Hoquiam, Washington.
