Gene Winter

Gene Winter, 77 years of age and a longtime Hoquiam area resident, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at his home in Hoquiam, Washington. He was born on November 8, 1934, in Holyoke, Colorado, to Elmer M. and Alta R. (Banaka) Winter.

The family came to the Grays Harbor area in 1937, and here he attended school. He graduated from high school in June of 1952. While in school he played baseball, football and basketball. He played the base horn in the school band for four years. He worked at Posey Manufacturing following high school until he entered the service. He was a rip-saw off-bearer where he received and stacked piano parts by hand.

He was a member of the United States Navy Reserve from 1959 through 1965 and had earned the rank of Gunner’s Mate First Class

On July 11, 1953, Gene Winter was married to Juanita Ann Bock in Enumclaw and they made their home in Hoquiam.

Gene worked for the City of Hoquiam’s Water Department from 1957 until 1987 when he retired as their department head.

Gene was a member of the Hoquiam Elks Lodge #1082, the Hoquiam Eagles Aerie #252 and the Grays Harbor Bowman. He enjoyed the family reunions at Mossyrock, camping at the Hoh, cutting firewood with his kids and grandkids, hunting elk and deer and fishing.

For numerous years he had coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. He was an umpire for various baseball games on the Harbor for some 23 years and had played slow-pitch baseball for 30 years. Gene had played all type of sports and he enjoyed watching his grandkids sporting events.

The couple was active participants of the Hoquiam Roamin’ Elks where they traveled all over the Unites States. They also went on many trips around the country on their own and enjoyed the time spent in Alaska; Branson, Missouri; Yuma, Arizona; Mossyrock, Washington and Wynoochee Wildwoods near Montesano, Washington.

Gene is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Carol Winter of Aberdeen; a son-in-law, Gary Loomis, Sr. of Hoquiam; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Sherian Winter of Hoquiam; and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Ann Bock Winter who died on December 7, 2011; a daughter, Judy Loomis of Hoquiam who died on March 26, 2009; a brother-in-law, John Bock who died in 1998 and a sister-in-law, Suzanne Erwin of Enumclaw who died in 1993.

The family requests donations be sent to a local youth baseball program of your choice.

A celebration of his life will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Hoquiam Elks Lodge, 624 “K” Street.

Private inurnment will be held later at the Hoquiam Sunset Memorial Park.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 – 5th Street in Hoquiam.
