Longtime resident of Westport, George W. Smithson, died at Willapa Harbor Care Center in Raymond on Sunday, March 10, 2013. He was 92. He was born in Hogeland, Montana, on February 22, 1921, the son of Roy and Ora (Clearwater-Haymaker) Smithson. He attended schools in Hogeland and worked with his father on the family cattle ranch.
On November 19, 1949, George married Elsie Gerdes in Chinook, Mont. and they came to Moses Lake, Wash. and then to Westport in 1961. While in Moses Lake, George had worked for the city in the refuse department and after coming to Westport worked for a time at Ocean Spray. He became associated with Evans Plywood Company for 26 years, retiring in 1982.
His wife, Elsie, died in Aberdeen on March 9, 2000, after 50 years of marriage.
George enjoyed working in his yard, insisting until recently that he could mow his own yard. He also liked to garden, walks on the beach and dig clams. He had been a member of the Moses Lake Moose for many years.
He is survived by a son, Dale of Westport; a sister, Jean Shawlee of Palo Alto, Calif.; and a brother, William “Bill” Smithson of Kalispel, Mont. He was preceded by a sister, Louise Divish and a brother, John Smithson.
Inurnment for George and Elsie will take place later this summer at the Lake Leven Cemetery in Villard, Minn.
