Hugh A. Bailey Jr. died on October 7, 2013, just before his 88th birthday, of congestive heart failure at Ashley Gardens in Bremerton. The son of Hugh A Bailey Sr. and Frances Welsh Bailey, he was born in Iowa City, Iowa in October of 1925. When Frances was well enough, the family returned home to Aberdeen.
Hugh Sr. wanted him to be a “native Washingtonian” so he dipped Hugh Jr. in the Pacific Ocean at Grayland. He graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1944, but did not walk with his class because he was drafted into the Army/Air Corps in January of that year. Upon his return home, Hugh went to work in the store his father built. He co-owned and managed Bailey’s Service in Aberdeen until 1977 when he moved to Nevada. In 2008, he moved to Silverdale to be near family.
Hugh married Mary K. Cobb in 1947; they had one daughter, Janis. He was a life-time member of the Aberdeen Elks. He loved cars, cigars, and playing the Lotto.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Janis; son-in-law, Richard; grandsons, Sean (Tracey) and Patrick (Jessica Daiker) Lamphere; 4 great-granddaughters; 1 great-grandson; and two Oriental Shorthair cats.
Graveside services will be held in the Silverdale Pioneer Cemetery at a later date. Mary asks that donations be made to Hospice of Kitsap County, the Kitsap Humane Society, or anywhere you please.
