Ingrid Kathleen Evans, 91, lifelong resident of the Harbor, died at Westhaven Villa in Aberdeen on Wednesday, August 21, 2013. She was born in Aberdeen on August 18, 1922, the daughter of Wilhelm and Fiina (Suomi) Lehtonen.
Knowing only the Finnish language, she learned English attending Whitman Elementary School in “Little Finn Town” just below Think-Of-Me Hill. Her parents both died when Ingrid was just 13 years old and she was then raised by her older brother, Victor. She graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1940 and Grays Harbor Business College.
Ingrid went to work for the Grays Harbor Bus Lines at the ticket window in 1941 through 1943. It was there that she met the love of her life, a bus driver, John R. “Jack” Evans. They were married in Aberdeen at Calvary Lutheran Church on June 26, 1943.
They started Evans Sign Co. in the garage of their home on 2nd Street in 1944. The business grew and moved several times before locating to the Simpson Avenue location. During this time Ingrid was a mother and homemaker, busy with a growing family of six, but also helped out at the “shop” when needed. In years to come she did the payroll and bookkeeping for the expanding business. They both retired in 1986 after over 40 years in the sign business.
Ingrid and Jack both were generous, loving, giving community people, taking care of those in need. They loved their children unconditionally and were always proud of their accomplishments. Mr. Evans died in Aberdeen in 2008.
Ingrid was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs. Jack, being a pilot, they attended “fly-ins” throughout the United States and even into Mexico. They also enjoyed traveling in their motor home, even taking a two month trip across the U.S.
She had been a member of the Zonta Club and the Aberdeen YMCA Women’s Guild.
Ingrid is survived by two sons, Lee of Grayland and John of Seattle; a daughter, June (Doug) Moore of Central Park; nine grandchildren, Kari (Herb) Brosnan, Dennis (Becky) Moore, Nathan (Melissa) Moore, Holly (Geoff) Sprague, Corey Evans, Melysa Evans, Sean (Rachel) Evans, Rene Evans and Travis Evans; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sons, Gary, Don, Bruce and Ray; and her brother, Victor Lehto.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the Westhaven Villa, Aberdeen. The time and final details will be announced the week prior to the service.
