John A. “Jack” Burkhalter, a lifetime Raymond resident, died Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle; he was 88. Jack was born October 26, 1923, in Raymond to Louis A. and Lena K. (Wiss) Burkhalter.
He graduated from Willapa Valley High School and made a career of Dairy Farming. He married Lois E. Poole in 1948; she preceded him in death January 2, 1982. Jack later married Betty Vaughn in 1990. She survives him at the family home in Raymond.
Jack is survived by his granddaughter, Lois Dracobly of Phoenix, Arizona; two daughters, Jackie (Fred) Dracobly of Raymond and Linda (Dana) Jerles of Raymond; a son, Robert (Jill) Vaughn of South Bend; six grandsons and ten great-grandchildren. Six siblings also survive him, Rosemary Hutcheson of San Francisco, California, Doris Thompson of Olympia, Irene Neve of Aloha, Oregon, Donnal Whittemore of Mesquite, Nevada, Bob Burkhalter of Rosburg and Dick Burkhalter of Olympia. A brother, Stanley Burkhalter preceded him in death.
Jack was a member of the Northwest Steelheaders, the Lewis-Pacific Swiss Society, the Raymond Elks, Washington Forestry Association and the Washington State Dairymen’s Association. He enjoyed fishing and raising fish, vegetable gardening, tree farming, dancing and playing cards.
A private family graveside service will be held with a public memorial service to follow at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at the Lebam Community Church. Memorials may be made to the Pacific County Historical Society or Willapa Harbor Helping Hands. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.
