John O. McMeekin, 90, passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia on Wednesday, July 17, 2013. He was born in Cranbrook, B.C. on March 8, 1923, to Jack and Paula (Hansen) McMeekin.
John was raised on his grandma’s homestead at Garrard Creek and attended Oakville Schools growing up. He played both defense and offense on the football team at Centralia Junior College the year they won the state championship.
In January 1944, he joined the Navy and served in the submarine services. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
John was a logger and high climber until his passing, always working hard and always had a story to tell. He worked in the woods for Saginaw’s, Morrison’s, Weyerhaeuser and ran logging camps in Canada and Alaska.
He enjoyed watching sports, hunting, fishing, trapping, clam digging and growing flowers. He collected and liked to display his logging equipment and wood burls.
He married Nadine Wick in 1947 and had four children. In 1970, he married Dorothy Bachtell. She survives at the family home. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his children and step-children, Kathy Dodson of Fair Oaks, Calif., Mike (Sue) McMeekin of Montesano, Wash., Jaymee (Barbara) McMeekin of Aberdeen, Wash., Tara (John) Sawyer of Soap Lake, Wash., Barbara (Bob) Gronberg of Spokane, Wash. and Randy (Candi) Bachtell of Montesano, Wash.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations can be made to the Central Park Fire Department.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 2013 at the Moose Lodge in Montesano.
