John, or Gerry to many, was born in Bellingham, Wash., on October 8, 1927, and passed away on October 15, 2012, at the Willapa Care Center in Raymond. He lived 55 of his 85 years in the home that he built on Alta Vista Hill in South Bend.
John married Audrey Hendrickson on July 22, 1950, and had three children, Teri (Dean), John (Dee) and Andi (Jim). John and Audrey later divorced. He married Inge Puckett on August 21, 1982, and became stepdad to Paul (Amy), Robert, Ann (Brian) and Roger (Mandy). At his death he was grandfather and great grandfather to many. Inge preceded John in death.
John was a machinist by trade. He served in the Marine Corps as a machinist instructor. He later worked at the Iron Works in South Bend, the machine shop at Olympic Hardwoods in Raymond and then opened his own machine shop (Harbor Machine) in South Bend. He truly understood hard work and a day’s work for a day’s pay.
In his early 60’s John went back to school and earned a degree as a paralegal and in his 70’s became a master gardener. He spent the last few years of his life gardening and puttering around his house.
John was very political and never missed a chance to argue politics. He was firm in his beliefs and when he put his mind to a task he was totally committed. He liked to write politically charged articles to the local papers. He loved this country.
At John’s request no services are planned. Arrangements were in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.
