Margaret Marie (Iyall) Olsen


Margaret Marie (Iyall) Olsen of Raymond, Wash., died on Thursday, Novenber 15, 2012, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Wash. She was 74.

Margaret was born on November 15, 1938, in Raymond, to Archie and Nina (Jack) Iyall. She was a proud graduate of Raymond High School’s Class of 1957.

She attended IBM business school in Olympia and went on to work at a varied jobs, including nanny, dog handler, cattle fitter, and oyster shucker.

She married Anton (Tony) J. Olsen on March 24, 1966, in Raymond. They had three children, Michael, Marcy, and Jim; and a foster, daughter, Marie Smith.

Her passion in life was her family’s herd of award winning Hereford cattle, run from the family’s homestead ranch, Olsen’s Timberline Ranch in Raymond.

She was the driving force in the family, encouraging her children and grandchildren to reach for excellence.

She always told her kids to present the animals to the best of their ability and be proud of who they were and what they were presenting.

She enjoyed traveling to Hereford shows in Reno, Nev., and Denver, Colo., and numerous other Hereford shows. She made friends all over the country through showing cattle.

When she wasn’t overseeing the family’s efforts to get ready for shows, she enjoyed garage saling, antiquing, cooking and baking.

She was known for the fabulous feasts she prepared for the haying crews who worked each summer at Olsen’s Timberline Ranch.

She enjoyed cooking for fundraising events in the community and was a very generous and caring person who was a friend to everyone.

She was proud of her Native American heritage and was an enrolled member of the Nisqually Tribe. She also served on the Shoalwater Bay Health Board for many years.

She was a 4-H leader for 35-plus years, a member of the Pacific County Fair Board for over 30 years, a member of the Lady Elks and the American Legion Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the American Hereford Association and Washington Hereford Association.

She was a past advisor for the Washington Junior Hereford Association. In 2011, she and her husband Tony were inducted into the Washington Junior Hereford Association Hall of Fame.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Danny and Art Iyall, and her son Michael.

She is survived by her husband, Tony; brother, Ray Iyall of Nisqually; brother, Denny Thomas (Cheryl) of Yelm; sister-in-law, Marie (Olsen) Bickar of Central Park; daughter, Marcy (Mike) Walden; son, Jim; daughter, Marie Smith of Nisqually; daughter-in-law, Cara Olsen; grandchildren, Jarod, Trevor and Owen Olsen, Tony and James Walden all of Raymond and Robbie Glanschneg of Montana, Frances Rohr of Long Beach, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to a scholarship fund being established in her name at Bank of America.

A celebration of life is set for 12 noon on Saturday, Dececember 1, 2012, at the Raymond Elks Lodge.
