Margaret Nevilla (Schaben) Haek

Margaret Nevilla (Schaben) Haek, 79, longtime resident of Hoquiam, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. She was born May 27, 1933, in Bazine, Kansas, to her loving parents Glenster and Mabel (Bondurant) Schaben.

She was raised in Bazine, Kansas, until her family moved to Hoquiam when she was 15 years old. She attended Hoquiam High School and Grays Harbor Business College.

Margaret married Joseph Peter Haek Jr. on January 10, 1951, in Oceanside, Calif. just prior to Joe’s leaving for the Korean War. They had lived their entire married life between Central Park and Hoquiam until recently moving to Aberdeen. She held many part-time jobs in addition to that of homemaker. She worked for Browers Apparel, KBKW, Montgomery Ward and General Tire to name a few. She worked tirelessly raising her four children and loving her husband of 62 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hoquiam and spent most of her spare time serving at the Church. She served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, she was a member of the Choir, played the piano and organ for church services and served in the kitchen giving her time and energy to God’s work.

She loved to sew clothes for herself, her husband and her children and grandchildren. She frequently worked on knitting, crocheting, hardanger, needlepoint, tatting and quilting. She loved everything to do with fabric and making beautiful creations with her hands. She was a fabulous baker; baking breads, cinnamon rolls, pies and pastries as often as possible. Margaret enjoyed taking her children (with Joe) on picnics to the river, sitting in the warm sun, and playing cards with her family and friends. She loved to dry her clothes outside on a warm day and potting flowers in the spring. She made numerous trips back to her home in Bazine, where she loved to spend time with her brother, Ronald, and many family members there.

Besides her husband of 62 years, Joe; Margaret is survived by four children, Darla (John) Mihovilich, Joe (Jamie) Haek III, Ronda (Kevin) West, and Lisa (Ronnie) Espedal Jr.; six grandchildren, James (Lori), Andrew, Brendon, Ronnie III, Samantha, and Ryan; and one great-grandchild, Maddy; she is also survived by her brother, Larry (Judy) Schaben; sister-in-law, Johnette Schaben; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend Delores (McCowan) Schneller of Bend, Oregon.

Margaret was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend. She will be missed every day. Our hearts are heavy with sadness for our loss, and know she’s without pain waiting to greet us.

Her family invites you to a celebration of her wonderful and beautiful life that will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the First Baptist Church of Hoquiam, 729 Eklund Avenue.
