Lifelong Aberdeen resident Martin Sven Schefstrom, 86, passed away at Grays Harbor Community Hospital on Sunday, February 3, 2013. Martin was born April 10, 1926, in Aberdeen, Washington, to Sven and Myrtle (Freeburg) Schefstrom. Martin graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduation. He served on the U.S.S. Coos Bay and the U.S.S. Gardiners Bay during World War II.
On May 7, 1955, Martin married Dorothy Eldart at The First Baptist Church in Aberdeen. She survives him at their home in Hoquiam.
Martin and Dorothy together built their home on Bench Drive in Aberdeen where they had lived for 40 years.
Martin worked for 30 years at the Grays Harbor PUD as a journeyman maintenance man retiring at the age of 49. He then restored a gillnetter and fished the Chehalis. Martin remained active painting in oils, making wind chimes for the art co-op in Westport and doing landscaping. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He enjoyed camping, fishing, duck and pheasant hunting, hiking in the Olympics, art, woodworking and he loved the many family trips to Hawaii.
In addition to his loving wife, Dorothy; his is survived by his son, Steve (Marci) Schefstrom of Raymond; and his sister, Mary Ann (Pete) Majar of Aberdeen.
A celebration of Martin’s life will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13th at the Aberdeen Elks.
