Norma B. Pekola


Norma B. Pekola, of McCleary, passed away from Alzheimers disease on April 18, 2013, at the Hindbaugh Adult Family Home in Montesano, Washington, at the age of 88 years. Norma was born January 2, 1925, in Hoquiam, Washington to Thomas and Dora Coombs Morton. She was the youngest of eight children. She grew up in Hoquiam and graduated in 1943 from Hoquiam High School. After she graduated she worked as a book keeper for Harvey Lawrence and Lamb Manufacturing.

In 1946, she met Paul P. Pekola , and the two were married soon after on February 16, 1946. The couple moved to the Mox Chehalis Road, outside of McCleary, where they bought property and rebuilt an old house. They have lived there for 67 years. Paul and Norma have two children, Trudy and Terry. She loved being involved in all of their activities as they grew up. Norma sold Stanley Home Products, and was the book keeper for Pekola-Hebert Logging, and the Pekola Limited Family Partnership for many years.

Starting in 1950s, she began caring for foster children. Over a twenty year period she and Paul took many children into their home. She was a member of the Grange, and helped with 4-H, and FFA. She was also a long time member of the McCleary Alliance Church and which is currently the McCleary Community Church. Over the years she taught Sunday School, served as a deaconess, hosted Child Evangelism, and worked each summer with VBS.

A dedicated housewife and mother, she was dedicated to her extended family and spearheaded the annual Morton Family Reunion. Her home was the gathering place for many family celebrations and activities. She loved her kitchen, and was a fabulous cook. Over the years she fed many a hay crew on the family farm. She enjoyed her flowers, yard and garden. She loved spending time with her five grandchildren, and was enjoying getting to know her great-grandchildren.

Norma is survived by her husband, Paul, at the family home; her daughter, Trudy Morris (Steve) of Walla Walla; her son, Terry Pekola (Connie) of McCleary; grandchildren, Jeremy Morris (Kate) of Toano, Virginia, Joshua Morris and Jennifer Martinez (Rigo) of Walla Walla, Jessica Long (Shawn) of College Place, and Crystal Englen (Zach) of Wilsonville, Oregon; and eight great grand children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Kyle and James; sisters, Maud, Ruby, Linnie, Dorothy, and Eunice; and great-grandson, Alexander Martinez.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013, at Whiteside Family Mortuary in Elma. Memorial Services will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013, also at Whiteside in Elma.
