Peter J. Van Hess passed away on September 17, 2013, at home with his wife by his side. Pete was born July 13, 1950, in Missoula, Montana. His family moved to Aberdeen, Wash., in 1960 where Pete graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1968. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Evergreen State College.
Pete loved life and spending time outdoors as well as spending time with a small group of his longtime childhood friends. He fought a courageous battle with cancer until the end.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Susan Hile; his mother, Veronica Van Hess; aunt, Gloria Watson; sons, Joshua and Eli Van Hess; daughters, Ericka Thomas and Michelle Ludeks (Erik); siblings, Gina Van Hess (Don White), Mark and Jan Van Hess, and Shelly Swenson (Leith); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Pete cherished his grandchildren who brought him great joy. He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Van Hess.
The family would like to give special thanks to Providence Sound Hospice for the loving care given to Pete during his prolonged illness.
A celebration of Pete’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on October 5, 2013, at the Jacob Smith House in Lacey. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Pete’s name can be made to Providence Sound Hospice or charity of choice.
