Vincent P. (Mack) McElwee, 89 years of age, a resident of Aberdeen for 50 years and of Lake Quinault for the last 17 years passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the family home in Lake Quinault. Mack was born on September 21, 1923, in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, to Thomas and Mable (McFadden) McElwee. He resided in Mt. Carmel until entering the Army in January of 1943. He served in the 44th Infantry Division during World War II, fighting in Europe for our country. When he returned from Europe, he married Shirley (Ginger) Marrs on August 14, 1945. HE was honorably discharged from the Army on Christmas Eve, in 1945 and immediately went to work for his father-in-law, Ervin Marrs, at the Monarch Grocery, where he soon became partner and eventually full owner. After closing the Monarch Grocery in 1977, he went to work for Harbor Thriftway until retiring in 1986.
Mack was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and past Faithful Navigator. He was also a lifetime member of the Aberdeen Elks Lodge and past president of the Active Club.
Mack is survived by his wife, Ginger McElwee of Lake Quinault; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Richard Raby of Ocean Shores and Eileen and Frank Johnson of Aberdeen; six grandchildren, Michael, Brian, Shannon, Sandi, Teresa and Kathleen (Katie); eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mack was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Thomas and Raymond; and two sisters, Catherine and Eileen.
A graveside service will be held at the Quinault Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2013, with Father Dennis officiating. A celebration of life will be held at the Rain Forest Resort immediately following the service.
