Walt (75), a lifelong Tacoma resident, was born to Vernon and Mary Lewis on April 21, 1937. On July 18, 2012, he lost his battle with prostate Cancer, passing into the arms of the Lord while being held by his loving wife, Loraine.
Walt was a 1955 graduate of Lincoln High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 until 1961 with 2 years active duty from 1957 to 1959.
Walt was a highly skilled machinist. Starting his working career at Brown and Haley in maintenance then moving to Boeing as a production machinist. He spent 26 years as a machinist for Globe Ticket Company. Finishing his working career with 14 years at Custom Machine in Puyallup.
Walt was an amazingly talented musician and entertainer. He was well known for his wit, charm and friendly smile. As a teenager, in 1951, he was fascinated by the banjo on records of the Fire House Five. So, his new career in music was founded. He was well known as the banjo player for Shakey’s Pizza Parlor’s in the 60’s and 70’s plus many other establishments in Washington state and beyond. He was the banjoist with Electric Park Jazz Band for 20 years and had been a member of the Seattle Banjo Club, Grays Harbor Banjo Band and the Tacoma Banjo Club.
My dear Walt had many interests and hobbies, and was an avid collector and accumulator of all kinds of interesting things. We loved to travel, making several driving trips across the United States, preferring the small roads through small towns. Walt is survived by his wife, Loraine, who he married on Valentines Day 1984. He is also survived by sons, Kelly Lewis (Ciela) and Ed Alkire (Susan); daughters, Cindy Hall (David), Stacy Lewis, Vicki Hoggard and Lorie McDowell (Doug); a sister, Vera Cudney; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
This very special, insightful, kind and thoughtful person will truly be missed here on earth but will be a wonderful addition in his heavenly home. A Celebration of Life for Walt will be announced soon. Memorial rememberances can be sent to: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) Mail Stop J5-200 P.O.
