What do the Connecticut, Columbine and Virginia Tech school shootings have in common? They were all gun-free zones; this meant that no one was armed so nobody could defend themselves from the gunmen.
My ideas are backed by criminologist Gary Kleck who is also pro-gun who stated that “crime victims who defend themselves with guns are less likely to be injured or have loss of property than victims who did not resist.”
This shows that if schools were not gun free zones or any other public place then the victims of these crimes like these would be able to defend themselves.
Gun violence has been and will always be a problem because the government does not realize that criminals do not follow the current gun laws and will not follow future gun restrictions.
Another issue like this that relates is drugs. If drugs are illegal then how come people still buy, sell, and consume drugs?
This would be the same for firearms because the people causing the problems are not law abiding citizens.
The federal and state governments are trying to take away our Second Amendment rights that state “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” These laws violate our constitutional rights as Americans and if they passed another amendment to make firearms illegal then they would be violating another right the framers of the Constitution gave us which was the Ninth Amendment which would keep our Second Amendment rights in effect because it states that “certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.”
These amendments make me believe that we all have the right to bear arms and states should have “shall-issue” laws like Florida that are NRA approved.
These laws still have requirements such as a minimum age, no prior felony convictions, and no drug or mental health issues. The Florida “shall-issue” law was passed May 12, 1987 and inspired the NRA’s campaign in the 1990s to have more states have the “shall-issue” laws.
This campaign was then followed about 20 years later by Ohio issuing 56,691 new concealed carry permits following President Obama’s election in 2008.
This was a 67 percent increase over the amount issued in the previous year which was around 33,864 licenses stated by the Ohio State government. According to the chairman of Buckeye Firearms Association, Jim lrvine, this increase was a “result of Obama being anti-gun and the fear that he was going to do something to affect gun ownership.”
Also according to a 2000 study by John Lott, Ph.D, “shall-issue” laws have reduced homicides by 8 percent, aggravated assaults by 7 percent, rapes by 5 percent and robberies by 3 percent. He argued that if states that did not permit concealed weapons in 1992 had permitted them in 1977, 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults and 12,000 robberies could have been prevented between 1977 and 1992.
Another issue with gun control is what the government would do after disarming their citizens. A horrible example of a country being stripped of its firearms is Germany.
In the 1940s Adolf Hitler disarmed Germany leaving it defenseless, and he ordered the slaughter of all Jewish men, women and children.
Using this information I want you to call, write or email your local congressman, senator or legislator to tell them how horrible gun control is and what it has done to people in the past.
Tell them how Hitler used it to disarm their people and kill them to get them to realize that the same thing would happen to our great country.
Tell them how if there were armed guards and trained teachers that the Columbine, Connecticut and any other school shooting could have been prevented.
Just make sure they know how important it is to them that we have our firearms to protect our country, friends and family.
The millions of people dead that could have been saved by a civilian with a gun cannot be wrong. Gun control does not work! We should know because our country’s existence is due to firearms.
