Daily World Grid Guessers for Saturday, Sept. 28

The Daily World Pro Football Forecasting Contest has thus far resembled an elementary school finger painting project. Everyone takes their turn as a group leader and the results aren’t always pretty.

Sports Editor Rick Anderson became the third permanent panelist in as many weeks to take weekly honors. His 9-6 record wasn’t great, but it nevertheless bettered sports writer Rob Burns and guest forecaster Brandon Peterson (each 8-7) and Vidette reporter David Haerle (6-9).

That vaulted Anderson into a tie with Haerle for the season lead at 28-17 (a .622 percentage). Burns trails by one game but can take solace in the fact that, if the trend continues, it is his turn to win this week’s competition.

Elma teacher and coach Bryan Schneider is this week’s guest forecaster. A 1987 graduate of Raymond High School, where he was an all-league running back, Schneider has coached a variety of sports — football, boys and girls basketball, cross country, track and softball — at Elma. He is currently an Eagle football assistant and last year coached the girls basketball junior varsity team to an unbeaten record.

An Elma Middle School physical education teacher since 1993, Schneider said he prefers college sports and is an avid fan of the University of North Carolina. That’s unorthodox enough for a Twin Harbors native but Schneider further separates himself from the majority of his neighbors by saying his favorite National Football League team is “whoever is playing the (Seattle) Seahawks.”

“I will never jump on the bandwagon,” he added. “Go, Texans!”

That’s the Houston Texans, whom the Seahawks visit Sunday. He and Burns pick the Texans to hand Seattle its first loss. Anderson and Haerle predict a Seahawk victory.

Openings remain for seven guest forecasters this season. Applicants must live in the Twin Harbors area and be accessible by telephone or email on weekdays. Those interested may contact Anderson at 537-3924 or via email at dwsports@thedailyworld.com.
