Hoquiam softball teams enter regional bracket play today

MERIDIAN, IDAHO — Both Hoquiam Babe Ruth softball teams have finished out pool play Friday in the Pacific Northwest Regional Babe Ruth 10-U and 12-U Softball Tournaments and advanced to today’s single-elimination half of the tournament.

Hoquiam’s 10-U team (2-1 in pool play) fell to Forks, 7-4, but routed Umpqua Valley, Ore., 15-3. Hoquiam will take on host Meridian in an 11:30 a.m. semifinal game today.

Hoquiam’s 12-U team blanked Northside, Idaho, 16-0 in four innings, in its pool-play finale. Hoquiam ended pool play 3-0 and outscored all of the opponents, 65-0. The semi-finals start at 1:45 p.m. today, with the title game at 4 p.m.


Forks earned the top seed in its pool by knocking off Hoquiam in the first game on Friday. Down 5-0, Tauni Hilliard had a two-run double, sending Kamryn Krohn and Charli Eastman in to score, in the fifth inning. Eastman and Hailey Wilson each added RBI singles. Wilson led Hoquiam with three hits at the plate.

Abbi Spradlin pitched four innings with six strikeouts. Wilson pitched two innings in relief with two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Hoquiamites routed Umpqua Valley. Spradlin had three hits including a triple and an RBI. Maddie German added two hits with two RBI and Hilliard contributed three hits with three RBI. Eastman had an RBI in the second game as well.

Hilliard was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts. Wilson pitched again in relief.


The Hoquiamites blanked Northside, Idaho, 16-0 in four innings.

Kaylee Barnum had two hits, including a grand slam in the top of the second inning into left field. She had seven RBI, including her first over-the-fence home run. Siara Marlow had two RBI.

Karlie Krohn had five strikeouts in four innings.

“It was outstanding from all of the girls,” Hoquiam manager Jason Barnum said. “The pitching has been dominant and every girl is contributing at the plate and on the bases. Hopefully, we can carry that momentum into the semifinals and the finals.”

Thursday’s Games

MERIDIAN, Idaho — No-hitters were the order of the day for both Hoquiam all-star teams in the Pacific Northwest Regional Babe Ruth Softball Tournament on Thursday.

Hoquiam pitchers authored a pair of no-nos in the 12-U age group. The Hoquiamites crushed Kuma, Idaho, 23-0, and host Meridian, 26-0, on the opening day of round-robin competition.

The 10-U Hoquiam team had it similarly easy, registering a no-hitter in a 13-3 victory over Kuna. Hoquiam then downed Meridian, 17-5.

All four Hoquiam games ended in the fourth inning via the 10-run mercy rule.


Papp and Marlow teamed up on a no-hitter against Kuna.

Papp aided her own cause with four hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Krohn added three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.

Krohn pitched the full four innings in the no-hitter against Meridian. She also had three hits, including two triples, in the same inning as Hoquiam batted around three times in the second.

Papp drove in five runs in this contest, Kylee Bagwell contributed three hits and three RBIs and Barnum had two hits for the Hoquiamites.


Spradlin and Wilson combined for a four-inning no-hitter against Idaho state champion Kuna.

German led the Hoquiam attack with three hits, including a home run. Hilliard, Eastman and Ruby Pope had two hits apiece, with Hilliard delivering a double.

German went 4-for-4, including two triples, and drove in two runs against Meridian. Hailey Lawrence had three RBIs.

Eastman, Spradlin and Kara Blodgett had two hits each for the Hoquiamites. Hilliard was the winning pitcher in this game, with Wilson again providing relief help.
