LONGVIEW — Colton Sundstrom’s victory in the 200-yard freestyle highlighted a strong Aberdeen showing in the Southwest Washington Invitational boys swim meet on Saturday.
Sundstrom captured the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.94.
Competing primarily against 4A and 3A schools in this all-classification meet, the Bobcats wound up fifth among 16 schools with a team score of 282. They finished one point behind Hockinson amoung 2A squads.
Skyview of Vancouver took team honors with 487 points. Mountain View, also of Vancouver, was a distant second at 324.
Aberdeen was missing several regulars, including senior standout Joseph Bowley, due to conflicting commitments.
Sundstrom, also a senior, endured some frustration as well Saturday. Second in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.04, he failed to meet state qualifying standards in that event by a fraction of a second.
The Bobcats placed third in 200 medley relay, while Dillon Rowe mustered a pair of fourths, in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
“I think the whole team was awesome,” Bobcat coach Keith Lile said. “Everybody worked hard and did well.”
Lile cited Keegan Davison, Jeremiah Smith, John Pellessier, Keegan Shippey and Brandon Grigsby for significant time drops.
Aberdeen swimmers who have not yet posted district qualifying times will compete in the subdistrict meet on Wednesday. Incredibly, the site of that meet has yet to be determined, with the YMCA of Grays Harbor and two Olympia venues among the possibilities.
