Aberdeen boys pick up a split in league cross country meet

Aberdeen’s boys earned a split in their lone home meet of the Evergreen 2A Conference cross country season.

The Bobcats edged River Ridge, 28-30, but fell to Tumwater, 21-47, in the double dual at Makarenko Park.

Tumwater fielded the only complete girls team.

Aberdeen freshman Kyle Hurd finished second in the boys race. With a time of 17:16 for 3 miles, he trailed winner Brent Knutzen of Tumwater by 12 seconds.

Bobcat teammate Aaron Martinez also cracked the top five by placing fifth. Running despite shin splints, Aberdeen’s Luis Chaires made his varsity debut and wound up sixth, one of the keys to the win over River Ridge.

Olivia Nicholson was the top finisher for Aberdeen’s girls, taking fourth in 23:33. River Ridge’s Ashley Ayres was the girls winner in 21:53.

Bobcat coach Sherrie Green said her inexperienced team, also afflicted with eligibility and health issues, continues to make progress.

“Each week we’re getting stronger,” Green said. “They’re showing a lot of maturity.”

The Bobcats will compete in the Montesano Invitational today.
