Aberdeen’s Poli Baltazar crosses the finish line to finish 10th at the Foot Locker Western Regionals cross country meet last weekend. Baltazar will be competing in the national meet Saturday in San Diego.

Aberdeen High School senior Poli Baltazar will be headed to San Diego this weekend for the Foot Locker Nationals Cross Country Championships.

The national event is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Balboa Park.

Baltazar qualified for nationals by placing 10th in a field of 227 in the Western Regionals last weekend at Mount St. Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. He also earned All-American status and an all-expense paid trip to nationals.

While Baltazar’s national expenses were covered, a fundraising run in his honor at Makarenko Park in Cosmopolis was necessary to defray his expenses to regionals.

Individual donations also helped cover his expenses.

“It was incredible to see the amount of support given by people who know Poli and didn’t know Poli,” Bobcat coach Sherrie Green said. “We are so proud of him and his accomplishments that have brought national recognition to this area and AHS cross country, but all of this could not have happened without the kindness shown to him.”

Saturday’s race will be streamed live on www.footlockercc.com.
