Aberdeen gets two individual wins at Shaner Invite

Shaner Invite

TUMWATER — Aberdeen’s Tyson Stipic and Poli Baltazar took advantage of the tough competition to break off individual event victories during Friday’s 48th annual Shaner Invitational at Tumwater High School.

Stipic, in the triple jump, won the event with a leap of 42-7 3/4 for the Bobcats’ lone field win. In the high jump, he was third at 5-10.

Baltazar paced the field in the 3,200-meter run and won by more than 10 seconds at 9:23.33. Earlier in the meet, he finished fifth in the 800m in a very stacked field.

“Tyson had a slight bruised heel on his second to last triple jump, got one high jump in and decided that was enough,” AHS head coach Kelly Stewart said. “It was a smart decision to take it easy. He’ll be fine for next week. Poli ran a 2-second PR in the 800m and still took fifth. He came back in the 3,200m and ran a great race. That was a very good field as well.”

In the girls meet, Shayna Wilson represented the best finish of the day for the Bobcats, taking third in the javelin with a toss of 108-7.

Today, Aberdeen will send representatives to the Chehalis Freshman Invitational. On Friday, Aberdeen will begin postseason play at the Evergreen 2A sub-district meet at South Sound Stadium.
