Big innings highlight Monte sweep

FORKS — Layne Bruner tossed a one-hitter and struck out 15 batters as Montesano blanked Forks, 12-0, in the first game of a doubleheader in Evergreen 1A League baseball play on Thursday at Forks.

The unbeaten Bulldogs (6-0, 7-0) also crushed the Spartans 17-0 in the second game. The Bulldogs had 12 hits in the second game, which ended at the end of the sixth inning, due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Bruner was working on a no-hitter until the fifth inning of the opener. The Bulldogs actually led only 1-0 at that point before breaking things open with an 11-run sixth. Elliot Mendenhall had a three-run homer in that inning.

“It was a pretty tight game up to the sixth inning,” Monte coach Mike Bruner said. “We were flat at the plate starting out and held on to a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning.”

The sixth was also the big inning for Montesano in the second game. The Bulldogs scored 12 in their half of the sixth.

Tucker Ibabao started out the sixth inning with a double. Three hit batters in a row followed that double. Later, Ibabao hit his second double of the inning to drive in two runs. Evan Bialkowsky doubled later in that inning as well.

Coach Bruner praised Kenny Roy, Bialkowsky and Maguire Cavanaugh for coming in off the bench in the sixth inning of the second game and having good at-bats, landing all three of them on base.

“Our entire team was better at the plate from start to finish in the second game,” said Coach Bruner. “(Tucker) Ibabao made a nice defensive play at third base and Matt Jensen threw the ball well.”

Montesano will host Rochester for a doubleheader on April 4.
