Big third quarter lifts HHS girls

CENTRALIA — Hoquiam’s girls found a step up in class to their liking.

Chelsy Stewart scored 11 of her 12 points in a pivotal third quarter as the Grizzlies downed Centralia, 47-41, in a non-league girls basketball game Tuesday night at Centralia.

Ellie Quercia mustered a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals as the Grizzlies came from behind to down the Class 2A Tigers.

Down 28-21 at the half, the Grizzlies (3-1) turned things around by outscoring the Tigers 20-4 in the third quarter. Stewart nailed one 3-point shot and several others from inside the key.

“We made adjustments and started making transition baskets,” Hoquiam coach Chad Allan said. “We picked up our defensive intensity, but the the key was we just started making baskets. It was a quality win.”

Stewart also pulled down 11 rebounds. Brandi Creviston added 12 points for Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies will be idle until Monday, when they host North Beach.
