Bobcat swimmers take 6th at state; Bowley 3rd twice

FEDERAL WAY — Bolstered by five top-five finishes, Aberdeen finished sixth in the team competition at the State 2A Boys Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday at the King County Aquatics Center.

Aberdeen senior Joseph Bowley placed third in both of his individual events. He was clocked in 2:05.30 in the 200-yard individual medley and 1:03.04 in placing third in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Archbishop Murphy’s Stephen Boden won the IM in 1:56.38, while Sehome’s Patrick Gregory was an equally decisive victor in the 100 breast.

Bowley joined Keegan Davison, Dillon Rowe and Colton Sundstrom on a 200-yard medley relay team that placed fourth with a season-best time of 1:45.22.

Sundstrom later established a PR by placing fifth in the 100 freestyle in 49.61. The Bobcat foursome of Rowe, Brad Farrer, Sundstrom and Bowley took fifth in the concluding 400 free relay with a season-best time of 3:26.63.

Aberdeen amassed 127 points in taking sixth as a team, which exceeded coach Keith Lile’s preseason expectations.

“Overall, I’m really excited,” he said.

While several individual times Saturday were a bit slower than in Friday’s prelims, Lile was happy with his team’s relay efforts.

“We had some great relay swims,” he said. “We had hoped we might do better in some (individual) areas. We dealt with them adequately and finished out the meet with an awesome 400 relay, which was a very good way to finish the season.”

Squalicum’s Ryan Korby, who won the diving, is coached by Aberdeen High grad Taylor Sundstrom (Colton’s sister), who is the diving coach for both Squalicum and Sehome in Bellingham. She also was the coach of a Squalicum girl who won state last fall.
