A hectic schedule couldn’t prevent Aberdeen from wrapping up the Evergreen 2A Conference girls swimming championship.
The Bobcats remained unbeaten with a 117-62 victory over the Centralia-Chehalis combine on Wednesday at the YMCA of Grays Harbor.
The league title marked a sharp turnaround from a year ago, when the Cats posted only a 4-7 overall record. Aberdeen improved to 9-0 this season, with only one dual meet remaining.
This was Aberdeen’s second meet in as many days. Understandably, the Bobcats failed to duplicate their performance from the previous day’s double dual against River Ridge and Black Hills, in which they registered a slew of personal-best times.Aberdeen coach Jan Simons was still pleased.
“They really had good times yesterday and I had some girls in difficult events,” Simons said. “They still had good times today.”
Although Simons hadn’t forgotten last year’s home meet with Centralia-Chehalis, in which the Lewis County combine upended the Cats with a nine-woman team, this contest was never in doubt.
The Bobcats owned only a 7-5 edge in event wins, but went 1-2 on five occasions. Aberdeen’s Danielle Rowe, Keola Holt and Bonnie Rowe swept the top-three places in the 50-yard freestyle. The Bobcats achieved the same feat in the 200 free relay when a Centralia-Chehalis team was disqualified.
Aberdeen junior Taylor Jones was a four-time winner. She held off CC’s Keesha Matz by half of a body length in the 100-yard butterfly, blew away the competition in the 100 breaststroke and shared in a pair of relay victories.
Bobcat freshman Emily May finished at least 40 yards in front of her nearest rival in the 200-yard individual medley. She later led for much of the 100 backstroke but was overtaken by CC’s Gabrielle Godlewski in the final 10 yards.
Diver Naomi Wolfenberger was Aberdeen’s other event winner.
Simons praised the performances of Magin Chesley and Marlena Luzzi. The latter shaved more than a minute off her previous best time in the 500 freestyle.
The Bobcats will compete in the all-classification Southwest Washington Championships on Saturday in Longview.
