Bobcats end long drought to win league opener

LACEY — Aberdeen ended a long league volleyball drought by beating River Ridge, 25-21, 25-17, 25-19, in an Evergreen 2A opener Tuesday night at Lacey.

Heather Dublanko delivered 10 kills, while Alahna Weber added eight kills and 12 assists for the Bobcats. Kiana Dixon contributed four kills and was also cited for defense.

The Bobcats, who had difficulty closing out sets in losses last week to Montesano and Hoquiam, maintained leads in the first and second sets and overcame a five-point deficit in the third.

“That’s what we’ve been working on in practice, pushing through to the last point and not making errors at crucial times,” said Bobcat coach Wilma Weber, celebrating her first victory in her second season as the AHS coach.

River Ridge took the junior varsity (25-18, 17-25, 19-17) and C squad (25-19, 27-25) matches.

The Bobcats (1-0, 2-1) will challenge Tumwater, the state’s second-ranked Class 2A team, on Thursday night at Sam Benn Gym.
