Bobcats sweep Shelton on road

SHELTON — Keyed by its defense and work on the boards, Aberdeen’s boys pulled away from Shelton in the second half to help register a co-ed doubleheader sweep on Friday night.

The Bobcats, led by Charlie Dietrich’s game-high 12 points, nailed down the contest with a 21-10 fourth quarter to knock off the Highclimbers, 51-34.

“By far, this was our best defensive and rebounding efforts of the year,” AHS head coach Leonard Barnes said. “We’ve been stressing half-court defense and we played that well. It was good to have a game with that much intensity and energy on defense and on the boards.”

Dietrich, who added five rebounds, three assists and two steals, knocked down back-to-back 3-point baskets in the fourth to fuel the late Aberdeen offense. Veek Cheema added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists, earning, along with Dietrich, Barnes’ praise for their work on the perimeter.

Collin Nord scored eight points and joined Zack Ball with six rebounds and three blocked shots each. Aaron Taylor and Ashton Williamson were cited for their work off the bench.

On Jan. 4, Aberdeen (3-7) travels to River Ridge.

Girls Bobcats 62, Highclimbers 17

SHELTON — Facing a young Shelton club, Aberdeen jumped out early and kept its momentum going in this non-league win on Friday.

Four Bobcats scored in double-digits on the night, led by 12 points each from Mo Donovan and Emily Fisher. Rachael Schermer, off the bench, and Alexxi Timmons added 11 points each. The Bobcats hit 60 percent from the field.

“We jumped out on them early and rode it out,” AHS head coach Aaron Roiko said. “It helps when you hit your shots early. Shelton is playing a young squad — freshmen and sophomores — and it showed.”

Schermer and Lily Walsh were cited for their work off the bench by Roiko.

On Jan. 3, Aberdeen (7-1) will host River Ridge.
