Bobcats trounce Ridgefield in district opener

RIDGEFIELD — A week’s layoff did wonders for Aberdeen’s batting eye.

Ashton Williamson slugged a grand slam and Reilly Fairchild and Caleb Harris contributed four hits apiece as the Bobcats outslugged Ridgefield, 13-7, in the opening round of the District IV Class 2A Baseball Tournament Tuesday at View Ridge Middle School.

Aberdeen (13-7) will face Evergreen 2A Conference champion Chehalis in a district semifinal scheduled for 4 p.m. today at Chehalis’ Bearcat Stadium. The winner not only advances to the district championship game, but also clinches a regional berth.

The Bobcats had struggled at the plate in their final few district contests. That was far from the case yesterday, as they slammed out 16 hits.

“To be honest, I think the kids were kind of embarrassed of how we finished and how they finished,” AHS coach Shon Schreiber said. “It was a great all-round day for us. It’s kind of nice to put it all together.”

The Bobcats scored twice in the first to take a lead they never relinquished.

Charlie Dietrich, who had singled, and Chase Johnson, who walked, pulled off a double steal. Dietrich scored on an infield out, while Fairchild’s single knocked in Johnson.

Williamson broke it open in the fourth with a slam that landed on the hill in right-center field. There are no fences at View Ridge, but drives that land on the hill surrounding the park are ruled home runs, while balls that roll up the hill are considered ground-rule doubles.

Fairchild went the distance on the mound, scattering nine hits but walking only one.

Dietrich added three hits for the Bobcats.
