Bobcats win four district swim titles

LONGVIEW — Aberdeen’s Joseph Bowley and Colton Sundstrom won two titles apiece in the District IV Class 2A Boys Swimming Championships on Saturday at the Mark Morris High School pool.

Bowley captured the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.77 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.12.

Sundstrom, who had met the state 100-yard freestyle time standard in Friday’s district prelims, won that event Saturday with a time of 50.42. He also caputed the 200 free in 1:53.10.

The top three in Saturday’s finals, plus those who met state qualifying standards, advanced to state beginning Friday at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way. Bowley had previously swam qualifying times in both his events.

In all, the Bobcats will send at least three individuals and two relay teams to state.

Aberdeen’s Bradley Farrer punched his ticket to state by placing third in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Bobcat 200 medley (Keegan Davison, Dillon Rowe, Bowley and Sundstrom) and 400 free (Rowe, Sundstrom, Farrer and Bowley) also advanced with second-place finishes.

The Bobcats could also earn a couple of state wild-card berths if other districts are unable to fill their allotments. Davison was fourth in the 100 backstroke, while the 200 free relay team also placed fourth.

The 200 free relay foursome was actually third with 50 yards remaining, but a bad turn proved costly.

Aberdeen took third in a tight team race. Hockinson won the team championship with 249 1/2 points. Mark Morris was second with 238, while the Bobcats were third with 236.

“If it weren’t for a couple of disqualifications here and there (in Friday’s prelims), we would have been very likely in the points race,” Aberdeen coach Keith lile said. “That is all offset by the fact that every guy swam their best.”

Lile was particularly happy with the number of district participants. The Bobcats sent 25 swimmers to this meet. Saturday’s placewinners:
