Capital edges out Aberdeen in overtime, 69-65

OLYMPIA — Intensely played throughout, Aberdeen and Capital needed an extra frame of basketball to determine this Evergreen 2A boys basketball contest on Friday.

The host Cougars had three shots at winning the game in the final minute, and the Bobcats’ Charlie Dietrich just missed a 3-point bomb at the buzzer.

In overtime, Capital slowly extended a slim lead and held on for a 69-65 victory over Aberdeen, eliminating the Bobcats from district postseason consideration.

“The kids played a complete game,” AHS head coach Leonard Barnes said. “It was a hard-fought win for Capital. We played hard, but we played great basketball.”

Zack Ball led all scorers with 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Bobcats (1-10, 5-14). Veek Cheema and Collin Nord each added 13 points. Deon Schlesser grabbed 14 rebounds, seven of them offensive, and Aaron Taylor added seven rebounds.

Schlesser was cited by Barnes for his all-around game and Taylor was cited for his play off the bench.

On Tuesday, Aberdeen will finish the season at Centralia.
