Chehalis clinches league softball title with 13-3 win over Aberdeen

A tremendous offensive performance by center fielder Marissa Reynolds led the Chehalis Bearcats helped spoil Aberdeen’s Senior Day on Tuesday.

Reynolds recorded three hits, including a double and a home run, drove in seven runs and scored three times, powering the Bearcats to a 13-3 win over Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference softball game at the Bishop Athletic Complex.

The game, which gave Chehalis the league title, was shortened to five innings by the 10-run mercy rule.

In the bottom of the first inning, a solo home run over the left-field fence by Alexxi Timmons put the Bobcats on the scoreboard first.

However, Chehalis responded with a long ball of its own in the third inning.

After Kaitlin Moore singled and Jessica McKay reached base on an error, Reynolds hit the ball over the fence in right- center field. Then Caitlin Reynolds doubled off the center-field fence and scored on a double by Kassidy Grandorff, giving the Bearcats a 4-1 lead.

Chehalis recorded 16 hits in just five innings of play, including four extra-base hits.

“They spanked the ball today,” Aberdeen head coach Jeff Timmons said. “That’s why they’re league champs and defending state champions. We know we can play with them. They just rose to the top tonight and hit the ball hard. We still feel good about our team, and our chances in the district tournament.”

Aberdeen’s only other runs came in the fourth inning. Mo Donovan hit a line drive single into right center field, then Grace Utto-Galarneau crushed a homer way over the fence in left-center field, cutting the Bearcats’ lead to 9-3.

In in the fifth inning, a Moore walk, a hit by Kenna Tornow and a walk by McKay loaded the bases. Marissa Reynolds hit a line-drive single into left field, plating Moore and Tornow. Caitlin Reynolds then drove in McKay from third with a sacrifice grounder.

Two batters later, Grandorff hit a single into center field, scoring Marissa Reynolds, and boosting Chehalis’ lead to 13-3.

The Bobcats, who have already locked up a fourth seed in the district tournament, will close out the regular season with a non-league game against Toutle Lake at Centralia today.
