Choker teams drop league openers


WOMEN

Raiders 106, Chokers 67

LAKEWOOD — Using an effective press, the Pierce College women pulled away from the Choker women in NWAACC Western Division play on Wednesday in Lakewood.

Carli Elwin was the leading scorer for the Raiders (1-0, 5-7), with 26 points.

Bobbi Britt had her fourth double-double for the Chokers (0-1, 4-6), with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Bianca Russell and Ashli Starr scored 12 points apiece. Russell grabbed 10 rebounds.

“Their press was very effective and we struggled with it for the whole first half,” said Choker coach Christine Nelson. “They got the lead and we couldn’t dig ourselves out of the hole.”

Nelson praised the performances of Britt, Russell and Starr.

On Saturday, the Chokers will host Lower Columbia.

Raiders 86, Chokers 70

LAKEWOOD — Four players scored in double figures as Pierce spoiled Grays Harbor College’s NWAACC Western Division opener on Wednesday at Lakewood.

Derek Porter paced the Raiders with 16 points, while Gary Jacobs and Braydon Kuiper added 14 apiece and David Jeffries tallied 11 for Pierce.

Grays Harbor’s Jordan Bowman fired in a trio of 3-point shots in leading all scorers with 17 points. Barry Smith and Riley Alvord scored 14 points each for the Chokers (0-1, 2-8).

The Raiders owned the boards, 48-31, and enjoyed a 22-5 advantage in second-chance points. The Chokers were also a wretched 8 of 19 from the foul line.

The Chokers return home Saturday to face Lower Columbia.
