LONGVIEW — Improved defense and ball-handling proved to be the key ingredients for a Grays Harbor College women’s basketball turnaround.
Bobbi Britt and Bianca Russell each attained double-doubles as the Chokers avenged a 30-point loss with a 66-54 win over Lower Columbia College in an NWAACC Western Division women’s basketball game Saturday at Longview.
Saturday’s result was a far cry from Lower Columbia’s 69-39 victory at Sam Benn Gym last month.
Interestingly, GHC coach Christine Nelson stuck with the same zone defense she primarily utilized in the previous game. The Red Devils, who entered the game tied for second in the division, were far less effective in their outside shooting, connecting on only 6-of-33 from beyond the arc.
“We got to their shooters quickly, so they didn’t have too many open looks,” Nelson said. “They just had people in their faces.”
Grays Harbor’s 15 turnovers represented a season low. Only three of those came in the second half.
The Chokers (2-8, 6-13) were also aggressive taking the ball to the hoop against LCC’s man-to-man defense. They wound up 17-of-33 from the foul line.
Britt scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Russell has 13 boards to go with her 10 points.
Point guard Molly Carmody also had a fine game with 16 points. She committed only one turnover in the second half. Wenda Poleo was Grays Harbor’s fourth double-figure scorer with 10 points.
While the game contained eight ties and six lead changes, the Chokers led for most of the second half. Up by nine on a couple of occasions, they fended off a Red Devil rally before pulling away from the foul line.
The Chokers journey to Tacoma on Wednesday.
