ELMA — Roger Crockett continued to make Grays Harbor Raceway something of a home away from home last weekend.
The veteran driver from Medford, Ore., captured the main event Saturday on the second night of the Bully Dog Performance Speedweek Northwest race Saturday at the Elma track.
It was the fifth time Crockett, the reigning American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region champion, has won a race at Elma.
Travis Rilat of Forney, Texas, nabbed Friday’s main.
Young Collen Winebarger of Corbett, Ore., took Friday’s Northwest Extreme Late Model main.
Crockett stalked pole-sitter Garen Linder of Central Point, Ore., in the early going before taking the lead on the seventh lap of the 30-lap main.
Unfazed by lapped traffic later, Crockett never relinquished the advantage for his second ASCS-Northwest victory of the season.
Linder finished second, followed by Californian Mason Moore, Jared Peterson of Stanwood and Trey Starks of Puyallup.
Grays Harbor Raceway favorite Jay Cole of Shelton was among the heat winners.
Rilat had an even smoother ride to the checkered flag than did Crockett.
Starting on the pole, the Texan set a fast pace in the opening laps of a main that included no mishaps.
Peterson attempted to challenge during mid-race, but Rilat skillfully negotiated lapped traffic to stay in front.
Henry Van Dam, another Grays Harbor Raceway regular, made a late move to pass Peterson for second. The latter, the Raceway’s midget car division champion in 2012, placed third.
J.J. Hickle of Quilcene placed fourth, while Crockett took fifth in this race.
Northwest Extreme Late Models
Winebarger, a highly regarded young driver nicknamed “Superman,” came from the back of the pack to take Friday’s late model race.
Making his debut in this classification, two-time defending track modified champion Joe German of the Wishkah Valley led the first four laps, later trading leads with Jack Marontate of Newberg, Ore.
Both were overtaken by Jerry Schram of Vancouver, but Winebarger charged past Schram on the 20th lap to move in front to stay. It was Winebarger’s fourth series victory this season.
Greg Walters of Banks, Ore., wound up second. German held on for third, with Schram and Jason Johnson of Gresham, Ore., rounding out the top five.
Grays Harbor’s Raceway’s midseason championships are scheduled for Saturday, with competition in the modifieds, midgets, street stocks and hornets. A fireworks display is also planned.
