With the Dallas Cowboys on the verge of closing out a pivotal victory over the Detroit Lions early Sunday afternoon, Sports Editor Rick Anderson had visions of increasing his lead in The Daily World Pro Football Forecasting Contest.
Four hours later, that vision had turned into a hallucination, as Anderson saw the specter of someone closely resembling Vidette reporter David Haerle looming over his shoulder.
Fueled in part by Detroit’s comeback victory, Haerle posted a brilliant 11-1 record last week to trim Anderson’s lead to one game in the season standings. Anderson went 8-4 on the week for an overall record of 74-39.
Sports writer Rob Burns, (9-3) remains well in the running, four games back.
A goal-line stand in Monday’s cliffhanging win over St. Louis, meanwhile, kept the Seattle Seahawks atop the NFC West standings. More importantly, it gives Montesano resident Kristof Aho the lead in the Guest Forecaster of the Year competition.
His 9-3 record unseated Dan Weber for the season lead in that race. Since Weber actually picked more winners (he was 10-4 earlier last month), he may have legal recourse in challenging the policy of determining this prestigious award on a percentage basis.
Bob Wiggins of Aberdeen is this week’s guest. A retired Weyerhaeuser and Grays Harbor Paper executive, Wiggins remains active in assorted volunteer programs in the community.
Having grown up in Green Bay, Wiggins is a longtime Packer fan, stockholder and season ticket holder. Through his contributions, he possesses a lifetime pass to the Packers Hall of Fame.
The panelists are unanimous on only half of this week’s 12 games. They are in accord, however, on a Seattle victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday.
