District IV 1A volleyball tournament kicks off Wednesday

Evergreen 1A League champion Montesano will be staying close to home, while runner-up Hoquiam will head south for the opening night of the District IV Class 1A Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs will face King’s Way Christian in an opening-round contest scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

The Grizzlies will take on La Center at the same time at the Castle Rock Middle School gym. Both the high school and middle school gyms will be utilized at both sites Wednesday.

Each team in the double-elimination tournament will play two matches Wednesday. The two teams that win twice will clinch state berths and collide for the district championship Saturday. The two clubs that lose twice will be eliminated.

The four teams that split will be competing for the third and final state berth Saturday.

Hoquiam will host the final day of the tourney. The championship match would be moved to Castle Rock if two Trico League are in the title contest.

District pairings:

At Hoquiam High School: 5:30 p.m. — Montesano vs. King’s Way Christian. At Hoquiam Middle School: 5:30 p.m. — Tenino vs. Woodland.

At Castle Rock High School: 4 p.m. — Rochester vs. Seton Catholic (loser out). 5:30 p.m. (time approximate): Kalama vs. winner Rochester-Seton Catholic. At Castle Rock Middle School: 5:30 p.m. — Hoquiam vs. La Center.
